so when the casting director asks to see a video of you jogging, then make a video. of you. jogging..
In the words of one of my secret lovers: ball were rocked. Indeed, my metaphorical balls were put in a carelessly constructed canoe, pushed into the thrust of a rushing river, then catapulted into oblivion. What I liked most about Drive was its simplicity: the director’s (Nicolas Winding Refn) of small mirrors (e.g. the rearview mirror) as replacements for reverse shots and the writer’s (Hossein Amini) short and pithy statements-as-dialogue, which make Ryan Gosling seem like a very sexy man (cuz sexy doesn’t talk too much, okayyyy?!)
The soundtrack was also pretty awesome although at times you feel like it’s a little contrived, like when the female is singing “…real human being” over Carey Mulligan’s close-up, you start to think, ok I get it, this is what she’s thinking about Ryan. Nonetheless, this is just one of the many filmic devices used in Drive that actually “worked” without forcing anything out of our imaginations.
On a side note, it took the film (*Spoiler Alert*) 70 minutes to draw Ryan’s blood. That’s pretty gangsta when you think about it: it took Ryan 70 minutes until he actually got hurt (Other characters shed blood long before this scene).
Okay so the only thing I didn’t like was the casting. When I look at Ryan (in film and in real life) I think, eh, now here’s a cute nerd I probably wouldn’t have humped in high school. And when I look at Carey I’m like, eh, and here’s a cute nerd who probably WOULD have. So assuming this casting is perfect for Drive, I’d also have to say this casting method was better the first time when I say it in Blue Valentine. Sorry, but it seems that the whole “short blonde hair/frumpy woman-look” is just the director’s way of ensuring Ryan will always look like some prurient sex symbol. Which he is. But c’mon. Cast him next to a supermodel and suddenly his star dims. Ouch.
Go see Drive if you know what’s good for you.
